Over the past 20 years, I’ve worn many hats and re-invented myself multiple times. I’ve never been afraid of change or taking on new challenges—sometimes out of necessity, sometimes because I saw an opportunity. Here’s a look at my journey, from a Clerk Typist III to where I am now, as a seasoned Virtual Assistant (VA), still evolving and learning.
Reinvention #1: From Clerk Typist to Community Organizer
I started my professional life working for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as a Clerk Typist III. After a decade, I wanted more meaningful work. So, I made the leap to the non-profit world, becoming a Community Organizer. That role lit a fire in me. Organizing events like multi-cultural festivals, children’s activities, and community clean-ups felt like I was really making a difference. I was connecting with people, solving problems, and making things happen for the community.
Reinvention #2: Launching a Latino/Bilingual Newspaper
During my time as a community organizer, I saw a gap in how information was reaching the Latino community. There was a clear need for better communication, so I re-invented myself again—this time as a newspaper editor. I launched a Latino/Bilingual newspaper, handling everything from writing, editing, and sales to distribution. If it needed to be done, I did it. Soon after, I expanded by starting a radio program and a website to further reach the community. I learned fast that when you own something, every task becomes your responsibility, and I thrived on that.
Reinvention #3: Entering the Digital World
As the media landscape developed, I knew I needed to adapt. I took a social media class at my local community college and pivoted once again, using my experience to land a job at a digital marketing agency. I write blogs, manage email campaigns, and craft press releases. I quickly have become the go-to person for all things content. The experience has expanded my skill set, making me more valuable to clients who needed both virtual assistance and marketing expertise.
Reinvention #4: Bookkeeping (The Next Chapter)
Now, in 2024, I’m onto my fourth reinvention: bookkeeping. It’s something I’ve recently taken an interest in, and while I’m still learning, I plan to start taking on clients in December 2024. It’s another skill I’ll add to my VA services, helping businesses with not just content and admin but their finances too.
The Virtual Assistant Role Throughout It All
Even while I was working in these various roles, I always maintained my Virtual Assistant business. It’s been my constant, allowing me to help clients across industries with tasks that range from administrative support to social media strategy. Over the years, I’ve worked with small businesses and entrepreneurs to help them meet their business goals.
